The ceiling light for clear lighting in living spaces

A ceiling light serves as central ambient lighting in many rooms because it distributes light from above and is mounted on the ceiling. In the living room, hallway, bedroom or study, it provides orientation without taking up floor space. Depending on the room size, ceiling height and furnishings, flat models, multi-flame versions or swivelling spotlights are suitable. When making your choice, it is important that the lighting fits in with everyday life: for arriving in the hallway, for tidying up in the children's room or for evenly illuminating a living area.

Planning a ceiling light: sensibly coordinating size, room height and light quantity

A ceiling light should match the surface area, ceiling height and use of the room. In small corridors or guest rooms, a compact model that sits close to the ceiling and illuminates the room evenly is often sufficient. In larger living areas, a wider luminaire or a multi-flame solution can be useful so that the light does not just reach the centre of the room. Flat designs are suitable for low ceilings because they protrude less into the room and leave walkways free.

A simple guide helps with the amount of light from a ceiling light: for general ambient lighting in living spaces, around 100 to 150 lumens per square metre are often used to ensure that the room is not just lit at certain points, but over a wide area. A room with dark furniture, heavy curtains or matt wall colours may need more light than a bright room with reflective surfaces. The decisive factor is not only the brightness of the light sources, but also the distribution. An opal cover diffuses the light more softly, while open spotlights direct more focused light onto individual areas.

Ceiling lights in the living room: basic lighting for seating areas, walkways and everyday life

Ceiling lights do not usually provide all the lighting in the living room. They form the basic lighting that provides a quick overview when entering the room, tidying up or when visitors arrive. Complementary floor lamps, wall lights or table lamps can supplement the ceiling lighting in the living room zone by zone, for example in the reading corner, next to the sofa or on the sideboard. This keeps the light flexible without having to plan the ceiling with multiple connections.

The position is important in open-plan living areas. A centre-mounted ceiling lamp can illuminate the room evenly, but does not always match the position of the sofa, table or TV area. If the sofa, coffee table and TV area are offset to the side, a model with several light outlets can distribute the light better to these zones. Swivelling luminaires direct light onto walkways or specific furniture without using a pendant luminaire over the entire room. Warm white light supports a cosy atmosphere in the living room, while very cool light often has a more functional effect there.

Materials, shapes and furnishings: combine ceiling lamps to suit

Ceiling lamps influence the room not only through their brightness, but also through their visible form. Round models look restrained and can be integrated well into rooms where there are already many furniture edges, shelves or pictures. Angular ceiling lights pick up on clear lines and match cabinets, dining tables or kitchen furniture with a linear design. In small rooms, very large shades can quickly appear dominant, while luminaires that are too small look lost in high or wide rooms.

The material and colour of ceiling lamps should harmonise with existing surfaces. White LED ceiling lights are less prominent on light-coloured ceilings and are suitable if the luminaire is to have a visually restrained effect. Models in black, metal colours or wood look are more visible and can visually pick up on furniture handles, table legs or frames. Glass and plastic often distribute light more softly. Open metal shades or spotlights emit light in a more focussed way. It is crucial that the shape and light distribution match the furnishings without creating too many competing shapes or light zones.

LED ceiling light with suitable IP protection rating: technology for bathrooms, corridors and adjoining rooms

An LED ceiling light can be equipped with permanently installed LEDs or replaceable light sources, which influences the subsequent adjustment of brightness and light colour. LED ceiling lights with permanently installed LEDs often have a flat design and often provide uniform illumination. Models with replaceable light sources remain more flexible if a different brightness or light colour is required later. For living spaces, warm white is usually suitable for cosy use and neutral white for areas where more functional lighting is required. Daylight white is more suitable for functional areas where focussed vision is more important.

In the bathroom, cellar, utility room or covered transition areas, the IP protection class plays an important role in the selection. The IP protection class shows how well a luminaire is protected against moisture or foreign bodies and helps with the selection for damp or more heavily polluted areas. Particularly in the vicinity of showers, washbasins or washing machines, the luminaire should be suitable for the moisture load at the specific installation location. A robust, flat interior light can also be useful in corridors with low ceilings if doors, cupboards or landings are close to the mounting surface. In the bathroom above the washbasin, it is therefore not only brightness that counts, but also the appropriate IP protection rating at the specific installation location.

Ceiling lights with special features:

Any ceiling light can illuminate the room. But playing music, remote control, automatic lighting, changing the colour or brightness - these are practical additional functions for more comfort and cosiness.

… with motion detector Every room lights up when you enter it? This is no problem with a motion detector. This means you no longer have to reach for the wall switch with your elbow if you don't have a hand free. You can find out what the difference between presence and motion detector is all about and what technology is behind it in our guide.

… with remote control One for the TV, one for the hi-fi system and one for the ceiling light. Nothing beats a remote control. After all, once you're cosily snuggled up on the sofa, you'll be happy when you don't have to get up again. Dimming, changing the light colours from warm white to daylight white and also choosing from colourful light modes - all this is then possible from the sofa.

… with loudspeaker Making light is not enough? The ceiling light should also emit rhythmic sounds? Then a model with a speaker that can be controlled via Bluetooth with your mobile phone is perfect for your needs. And your smartphone is already playing the latest charts on your light. Simply brilliant!

… with colour change Cosy warm white or cool and businesslike? You don't have to decide. A light with the option to change colour keeps all your options open. Depending on what you're doing at the time: working, for example, or relaxing at the end of the day. You can tell whether a light can change the light colour or even light up in bright colours by the blue-yellow and coloured circle icon in the shop, for example with our ceiling lights from Philips Hue. The product details also provide information on this under "Light colour".

… with dimmer For some activities it just has to be bright. You will vacuum most effectively with maximum brightness - if you don't want to miss any woolly mice. You need much less light for a glass of wine in the evening. So it's a good idea to be able to dim your ceiling light as required. This can be done either via an extra mounted dimmer or, with practical Easydim lamps, simply via the wall switch.
