Both G4 and GU4 lamps are low-voltage light sources. The GU lamps are generally fitted with a reflector with an 11/8 inch diameter, labelled MR11.
Attention: G4 and GU4 are often confused, but are not identical. Although both have a pin spacing of 4 mm, the diameter of the pins is slightly larger for GU4 with Ø 0.95 to 1.05 mm than for G4 with Ø 0.65 to 0.75 mm.
G4 / GU4 MR11 light sources are very small and compact. They are most frequently used for recessed furniture lights, under-cabinet lights or extractor bonnets, for example. Some designers have also opted for these light sources. The Telchisugiò from Catellani & Smith, for example, lights up with a GU4 MR11 lamp, while the Drop from Alma Light Barcelona has G4 sockets.
The difference between the light sources lies in the pin spacing (GU5.3 pins have a spacing of 5.33 mm) and usually also in the reflector size, indicated by the following MR.
Both light sources are low-voltage light sources, but GU5.3 lamps are used more in spotlights and spotlights, e.g. also in the form of surface-mounted ceiling lights.
