LED panel for even lighting on ceilings and walls

Making good use of LED panels in the kitchen, hallway and study

An LED panel is particularly useful in kitchens, hallways, studies and utility rooms, where visibility, a clear overview and functional lighting are important. In the kitchen, even ceiling lighting makes it easier to work at the worktop, sink and storage areas, without the clutter caused by multiple visible lights. In the hallway, a wide-angle light helps you find your coats, shoes and keys quickly. In small entrance areas, a low-profile light often creates a calmer atmosphere than a large downlight.

In the study, an LED ceiling panel should keep the room well lit overall and cause as little glare as possible on the desk and the screen. An LED ceiling panel can provide the general lighting here, whilst a table lamp provides additional light for the work surface. In utility rooms, pantries or basement hallways, practicality is usually the main priority. A simple panel light is a good choice there because it takes up little space and illuminates the room well.

LED ceiling panel: soft lighting for bright, open spaces

A ceiling panel with LED technology usually spreads the light more widely than a spot ceiling light. This results in fewer harsh light-dark contrasts, which is particularly pleasant in low-ceilinged or narrow rooms. The ceiling looks tidy because the panel lies flat against the surface or is integrated into it. This can be useful in rooms where furniture, shelving or open-plan kitchen areas already feature plenty of lines and shapes.

An LED ceiling panel blends in well with interiors designed to look functional and clean-lined. White or light-coloured models are barely visible against white ceilings. Darker frames, on the other hand, can create a visible border. This is particularly true when they match window handles, door fittings or furniture edges. In living areas, the lighting should not be too cool, so that it does not resemble that of an office or adjoining room. In the hallway and kitchen, the lighting can be more neutral, provided it is suitable for the space.

Choose the right LED panel for ceiling, wall or recessed installation

With an LED panel, the type of installation plays a major role in determining which model is best suited to the room layout. A ceiling-mounted LED panel is ideal if you want general lighting in the centre of the room and there is a suitable power supply point on the ceiling. Surface-mounted models are installed directly onto the ceiling and are particularly suitable for concrete ceilings or retrofitting projects. You don’t need a suspended ceiling, and they also have a subtle appearance.

Recessed lights or recessed panels are better suited to suspended ceilings, louvre ceilings or ceiling areas with a cavity. There, part of the body of the luminaire is recessed into the ceiling, giving the ceiling surface a particularly smooth appearance. An LED wall panel can be a good alternative in hallways, stairwells or side rooms if there is no suitable connection point on the ceiling. When mounting on a wall, the position should be chosen so that the light does not cause glare and walkways remain clearly visible. Large panels take up a lot of visible space on small walls, whereas narrow formats are less conspicuous.

Dimmable LED panel, RGB function and incorporating light colour into everyday life

A dimmable LED panel offers greater flexibility in terms of brightness when a room is used for different purposes. In a kitchen-diner, bright lighting can be useful when cooking, whereas softer lighting is more pleasant at the dining table. In the study, brighter lighting helps with tasks that require concentration, whereas in the evening, less light is often sufficient. It is important that the light, dimmer, remote control or app are technically compatible so that the light responds consistently.

RGB LED panels are particularly suitable for rooms where coloured light is used for specific purposes, rather than simply for general everyday lighting. This could be a teenager's bedroom, a gaming area or a media wall. For everyday general lighting, white light is usually more important than RGB colour effects. Warm white creates a cosier atmosphere, cool white works well in kitchens, hallways or studies, and daylight white is more suitable for highly functional areas. When choosing a dimmable LED panel, you should check not only the brightness but also whether the desired light colour is suitable for the room’s intended use.

LED ceiling panel: Check the size, IP code and installation conditions

The size of an LED ceiling panel affects how evenly a room is lit. A long LED panel measuring 120 x 30 cm is a good example of a size suitable for narrow spaces such as hallways, kitchen units or worktops. A 120 x 60 cm LED panel is wider than a narrow, elongated model and can illuminate a larger, continuous area in spacious kitchens, offices or hobby rooms. Square formats, such as a 62 x 62 cm LED panel, are often well-suited to louvre ceilings or symmetrical room layouts, whilst smaller square or rectangular panels are ideal for more compact areas. The shape of the LED panel should be chosen to suit the ceiling or wall surface, so that the light fits in with the room layout.

When it comes to damp rooms, utility rooms or garages, the IP code of an LED panel is an important factor to consider, as moisture, dust or dirt can be a major issue in these environments. It indicates the level of protection a light offers against contact, foreign objects and moisture, thereby helping you choose the right one for dry living spaces or utility rooms subject to heavier use. In dry living areas, a model with a lower IP code is usually sufficient compared to those required in bathrooms, utility rooms or garages. The installation situation should also be clear in advance, as surface mounting, recessed installation and suspension system each have different requirements. In a rented flat with existing ceiling wiring, a surface-mounted panel is often a more obvious choice than a flush-mounted panel, which requires a suspended ceiling in the hallway or study.
