Chandeliers for different rooms and living styles

A chandelier immediately catches the eye in the room. In everyday life, however, its function is the most important factor. Above the dining table, it focuses the light differently than a flat ceiling light. In the living room, it appears more prominent than many other lights on the ceiling. When choosing a chandelier, it is therefore not only the style and material that are important, but also the size of the room, the height of the suspension and the question of whether directional or uniform light is required. This makes it easier to assess which chandelier makes sense in your own home.

Chandeliers in the dining room, living room and other rooms

A chandelier above the dining table often organises the dining area more clearly than a wide ceiling lamp because the light is more strongly related to the table surface. In the dining room, this bundling of light is particularly useful in open-plan living areas where the table, sofa and kitchen are close together. In the living room, the proportions of the luminaire and the room are more important for a chandelier. A large chandelier can work well there if the ceiling is not too low and there is enough free space all round. In smaller rooms, a small chandelier usually looks more harmonious because it does not permanently draw the eye upwards. Less expansive chandeliers are usually the better choice for hallways or bedrooms, especially if the room is already characterised by furniture, carpets or wall colours. In the bathroom or in covered outdoor areas, it also matters whether the chandelier is designed for humidity or temperature fluctuations. For chandeliers in such transitions between inside and outside, the installation situation is more important than the pure appearance.

Styles for chandeliers: simple, modern and classic

The stylistic effect of a chandelier depends less on the basic type than on the shape, surface and details. A simple chandelier with clear arms and little decoration usually goes well with calm interiors with wood, fabric and matt colours. Metal models in black, chrome or brass look more straightforward and are easier to combine with modern furniture than heavily decorated chandeliers. Classic chandeliers with glass or crystal take up more space, even if their diameter is similar. They are therefore more suited to environments where there are already reflective surfaces, a larger dining table or traditional furniture. An oriental chandelier looks more striking than simpler models because the patterns, shadows and surfaces work more strongly with the surroundings. A chandelier doesn't have to look old-fashioned. Modern shapes can also appear calm and suitable for everyday use as long as the material, colour and furnishings are recognisably compatible.

The right size, height and number of flames for a chandelier

When it comes to the size of a chandelier, it is not only the diameter that counts, but also the height of the chandelier. In rooms with a normal ceiling height, it usually makes sense to look for models that do not block the view too much when you move around the room. A model that does not block the view too much is particularly helpful if the table is rather narrow or the chandelier in the living room hangs close to the walkway. The luminaire can sit lower above a dining table than in the centre of the room, as there is no direct through-zone. A 5-flame chandelier can be a suitable intermediate solution for medium-sized dining tables, while multi-flame models tend to dominate the room more quickly. The shape of the chandelier also influences the light distribution. Wide arms distribute the light differently than compact, upward-facing lampholders. Anyone looking for a ceiling chandelier usually pays more attention to low height than to large projection. This makes it easier to assess whether the light is framing the table or visually defining the entire room.

Materials, light sources and technology for chandeliers

When it comes to chandeliers, the material and technology primarily influence the care, lighting effect and place of use. A metal chandelier is often easier to clean than models with lots of crystals or open glass details, where dust becomes visible more quickly. With visible lampholders, the choice of light source directly influences the overall appearance. A light bulb for the chandelier can be replaced by a suitable LED light source if the shape is to be retained and the light is still to appear uniform. An LED chandelier is particularly practical when permanently installed technology is required and the effort involved in changing individual light sources needs to be kept to a minimum. For chandeliers in areas with moisture or in protected zones outdoors, the appropriate IP protection rating is crucial. In the case of chandelier-style wall lights or an outdoor chandelier, it is also important how close the light is mounted to the weather, steam or splash water, for example in a covered entrance area or next to the patio door.
