Find the right lampshade for your table lamp, floor lamp or hanging light

A lampshade determines how bright, directional or subdued a lamp appears in everyday use. The light on the bedside table should generally be soft, whilst by the sofa it can be more focused for reading; above the dining table, even downward lighting is essential. The shape, size, material and colour of the umbrella are key factors. This allows an existing light to be adapted to new furniture, different rooms or changing lighting requirements without having to replace the entire lamp.

Lampshade: the right look for your room and lighting needs

The lampshade directs the light, reduces glare and shapes the way the lamp is perceived in the room. A light-coloured lampshade diffuses the light more softly throughout the room, whilst a dark lampshade makes the light stand out more as a design feature. Open lampshades emit light both upwards and downwards. Solid lampshades or tightly woven fabric shades make the area around the light appear calmer, as less light escapes from the sides.

In the living room, a wide lampshade on a floor lamp can provide more even lighting for the seating area without flooding the whole room with light. In the bedroom, it’s a good idea to fit a small lampshade to the bedside table lamp so that the light doesn’t shine directly into your eyes when you’re reading. In the hallway or kitchen, a clean, hard-wearing solution that complements existing lights and furniture finishes is often the best choice. When making a choice, therefore, it is more important to consider how often and in what situations the lamp will be used than to focus on a particular style.

Lampshade for a table lamp on a sideboard, desk or bedside table

A lampshade for the table lamp should be suited to the height of the light and the distance from the seated or reclining position, so that the light source is not visible in an unsightly manner. On a bedside table, a low-slung lampshade looks more pleasing if the light source is not visible when you are lying down. On a sideboard, the lampshade can be larger, as the lamp is used there more as subtle supplementary lighting. At a desk, it makes sense to use more directional lighting so that the work surface is lit in a way that is not just decorative but also practical.

Unusual lampshades for table lamps are particularly suitable for places where the light is clearly visible, such as on a chest of drawers in the living room or on a console table in the hallway. Patterns, bold colours or metal lampshades are better suited to a space where there isn’t much other eye-catching furniture competing for attention. A white or grey lampshade is easier to combine with wooden, glass or black lamp bases and remains understated even when the décor changes.

Lampshade for the floor lamp in the living room and reading corner

A lampshade for a floor lamp usually needs to complement the room’s décor more effectively than one for a table lamp. The light is often placed next to a sofa, armchair or bookcase and can be seen from several angles. A larger lampshade works well with tall floor lamps, as it creates a more balanced look and prevents the top of the light from appearing too narrow. With a low floor lamp or a slender base, however, a lampshade that is too wide can quickly look bulky.

In the living room, a fabric lampshade creates a soft, ambient glow when the floor lamp is used instead of the ceiling light. In the reading corner, the lampshade should be positioned so that the light falls on the book, magazine or side table. Black or dark grey lampshades for floor lamps block out lateral light more effectively and highlight the area beneath the light. Light-coloured fabrics made of cotton or blended fabrics let more light through and are ideal if the floor lamp is also intended to provide general lighting.

Lampshade for the hanging light above the dining table and kitchen island

A lampshade for the hanging light serves a different purpose above the dining table than a lampshade in the living room or bedroom. With a hanging light above the dining table, the focus is on illuminating the table surface. The lampshade should direct the light downwards without dazzling people at the table. A single, larger lampshade usually creates a calmer atmosphere over a round table, whereas several smaller lampshades can illuminate the surface of a long table more evenly.

When choosing a lampshade for a kitchen island, the material and ease of care are important factors to consider. A metal lampshade is often easier to wipe clean than a delicate fabric one and goes well with kitchens featuring sleek fronts, black handles or exposed stainless steel surfaces. In open-plan kitchens, the hanging light should also complement the rest of the lighting in the room. If you already have floor lamps or table lamps with fabric shades, a pendant light with a similar shade colour can help create a smoother transition between the cooking area and the dining area. If the ceilings are very low, the lampshade should remain compact so that the lamp does not make the room appear shorter.

Choose the material, colour and size of the lampshade

The right lampshade for a lamp depends on the material, colour and proportions. The fabric has a cosy feel and diffuses light more softly. Metal blocks out light more effectively and is suitable for areas where a clearer light distribution is required. Glass can appear more transparent, whilst paper or natural materials can add a visible texture, depending on how they are processed. The key thing is that the lampshade matches the existing light fitting and the room.

The colour affects both the lighting effect and the visibility of the light. White, cream and light grey tones are easy to incorporate into bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Black, charcoal grey or bold colours stand out more and should echo a colour or finish found in furniture, pictures or other accessories. When it comes to size, what matters is whether the lamp base and lampshade complement each other visually. A small lampshade goes well with compact bedside table lamps, whilst a large lampshade is better suited to tall floor lamps or large pendant lights. Before replacing a lampshade, you should check the socket, mounting and diameter to ensure that the new shade fits securely and the lamp remains stable in everyday use.
