LED moisture-proof light

Robust light for cellars and garages

An LED moisture-proof light is a specially sealed lamp that resists moisture, dust and, if necessary, impact and works with energy-efficient LED technology. Compared to conventional lights, an LED moisture-proof light offers significantly higher energy efficiency, longer service life, better light quality and lower maintenance costs. This lighting solution is therefore ideal when reliable lighting is required in damp or dusty environments. A moisture-proof light provides bright, uniform light where conventional lamps quickly reach their limits, for example in basements, garages, workshops or warehouses.

Definition of terms: The terms moisture-proof light and wraparound light are usually used synonymously, with wraparound light describing the design with an impact-resistant cover. Most LED wraparound lights have an impact-resistant plastic housing and are highly resistant to knocks or impacts.

Moisture-proof light explained: structure & advantages

What is a moisture-proof light and how is it constructed?

A moisture-proof lamp - often also called a wraparound light - is specially designed for use in damp or dusty rooms. The robust housing made of plastic or aluminium is fitted with seals that make the light waterproof and dustproof. An impact-resistant cover ensures uniform, glare-free illumination and protects the bulb at the same time.

What are the advantages of a damp-proof LED bulb?

A damp-proof LED bulb has high energy efficiency - it is up to 80 % more efficient than conventional fluorescent tubes. In addition, modern LED moisture-proof lights have a lifespan of generally 30,000 to 50,000 operating hours. This reduces maintenance, as there is no need to change tubes - ideal for ceiling lights that are difficult to access.

Areas of application and requirements for moisture-proof lights

Moisture-proof lights are used in basements, garages, workshops, storage rooms, laundry rooms, bathrooms and covered outdoor areas.

Utility room and laundry room

For flair and cosiness, the lighting concept for the living room and bedroom should include area and accent lighting in addition to general lighting. For example, a floor lamp can be used to bathe the reading corner in cosy light or LED strips or fairy lights on the shelf can be used to create even more warm flair. Materials such as paper, textile and wood veneer are suitable for the lights themselves, whose lampshades flooded with light look enchanting. Perforated patterns and embossed glass create harmonious patterns full of flair.

Garage and carport

LED moisture-proof lights with IP54 or IP65 and cool white light are ideal for garages. In garages in particular, several light sources should be used so that, for example, unloading the car is shadow-free and therefore easier.

Workshop and warehouse

Depending on the length of the workbench or work area, an LED wraparound light up to 150 cm long and with a cool white light colour is worthwhile for workshops. An IP code of IP6X is required to ensure that the light is dust-tight and can therefore easily withstand work such as wood and metal sawing. Depending on their size, moisture-proof lamps with a brightness of 3,000 to 5,000 lumens are recommended for a workshop.

Cellar and storage rooms

In basements and small rooms in general, compact moisture-proof lights with IP44 and approx. 1,500-2,000 lumens.

Bathrooms and interiors with high humidity

Moisture-proof lights are also an option in the bathroom, as long as the correct IP code (e.g. IP44 outside the protected areas around the bath and shower) is maintained. The closer the light is to be mounted to a source of moisture, the higher the IP code must be.

Outside in covered outdoor areas

LED wraparound lights with at least IP65 are ideal for carports, patios or covered outdoor areas. This ensures robust outdoor lighting against rain and dust.

The right choice of wraparound lights

Several factors play a role when choosing an LED moisture-proof light. When buying, you should pay attention to IP code, length, lumen value, light colour, material quality and additional functions such as sensors. High-quality LED moisture-proof lights also offer better seals, longer service life and higher efficiency.

IP code and robustness

Whether moisture-proof lights are waterproof or only splash-proof depends on the IP code. IP44 is splash-proof. In principle, IP65 offers better protection than IP44, as the light is completely sealed against dust and water jets. IP44 or IP54 is usually sufficient for basements and garages, while outdoor areas or wet zones usually require at least IP65.

Light colour and colour temperature

The terms warm white, cool white and cold white describe the colour temperature in Kelvin: warm white (<3.300 K), neutralweiß (3.300 bis 5.300 K) und kaltweiß (>5,300 K). With regard to the light colour of the LED moisture-proof light, the application should be taken into account: Universal white is suitable for sober task lighting, warm white has a more homely effect and daylight white provides use-orientated lighting in cellars and garages.

Brightness and light output (lumens)

The specific application location determines the brightness. Often approx. 1,000 lumens for small storage rooms. Powerful models from 150 cm in length and over 5,000 lumens are suitable for large rooms. As a rule, 150 lumens per square metre of the area to be illuminated is calculated.

Length and design

A 60 cm LED moisture-proof light is sufficient for small cellars, storerooms or pantries. The 120 cm LED moisture-proof light is often used as an all-rounder for cellars and garages. A 150 cm LED moisture-proof light is used in large workshops or halls, for example.

Comfort and sensor technology

LED wraparound lights with motion detectors or twilight sensors or dimmable LED moisture-proof lights are more efficient as they only switch on when the light is absolutely necessary. They also increase convenience, as there is no need to manually feel for a light switch.

Smart and modern

Smart moisture-proof lights with WLAN, ZigBee or Bluetooth can be integrated into smart home systems. This means that all functions can be conveniently controlled by app or voice. Please refer to the relevant product specifications for information on compatibility.

Bulbs and systems: LED tube bulb vs. complete luminaire

There are two systems for LED moisture-proof lights: complete lights and wraparound lights with replaceable tube bulb (for example G13). A complete luminaire is optimised, ready for immediate use and offers maximum efficiency. Retrofitting an LED moisture-proof light with an LED tube bulb makes sense if existing lights are to be retained. Attention must be paid to the compatibility of the LED tube bulb with ballasts and to the correct length of the bulb.

Tip: In the long term, the use of a complete luminaire is usually more economical, more durable, requires less maintenance and is more energy-efficient.

Installation and application: Installing moisture-proof lights safely

Important: An electrician is recommended for the installation of a moisture-proof lamp.

Moisture-proof lights can be flexibly installed on walls or ceilings. LED moisture-proof lights are mounted on the ceiling or wall with brackets and connected electrically. Through-wiring is possible if several lights are to be installed in series. Through-wired for LED wraparound lights means that several lights can be connected directly one behind the other, which is particularly interesting in commercial areas or for larger carports. Maintenance usually only requires regular cleaning of the cover and checking the seals to ensure that the moisture-proof LED light remains permanently watertight.
