LED lighting for living spaces, kitchens and functional areas

LED lighting is suitable for rooms where general lighting, task lighting or wayfinding lighting needs to be planned to suit the intended use. In the kitchen, the worktop needs brighter task lighting than the dining table. In the living room, general brightness and less glare in areas around the sofa, bookshelves or reading corner are important; in the hallway, visibility and ease of switching lights on and off are key. Thanks to the wide range of LED lights, LED bulbs and accessories available, LED lighting can be tailored to individual rooms, pieces of furniture and existing connections.

Choose LED lighting to suit the room and its intended use

When selecting LED lighting, the first considerations should be the type of room, the visual task, daily use and the appropriate type of luminaire. In the kitchen, it’s particularly important to have even lighting on worktops, under wall units and above the hob. Under-cabinet lights or flat panels help to reduce shadows on the worktop when the ceiling light alone is not sufficient. In the living room, a combination of general lighting and smaller areas of light works well. Ceiling lights help you see everything clearly. Floor lamps and wall lights provide light for the sofa, bookshelf or reading corner.

In the bedroom, softer lighting using warm white LED bulbs is often sufficient. Bedside table lamps, wall lights by the bed or dimmable LED lights are useful in this area because they are less glaring than a single bright ceiling light. In the hallway or entrance area, on the other hand, a clear view and ease of use are key. An LED light with a motion detector can be handy in a hallway or entrance area when you’ve got both hands full with bags, jackets or shoes anyway.

Using LED lights for ceilings, walls and furniture in a targeted way

Depending on where they are installed, LED lights are used as ceiling lights, wall lights, pendant lights, recessed lights, spotlights, panels or under-cabinet lights. LED ceiling lights are suitable for general lighting, particularly in rooms with little daylight or in areas that need to be fully lit on a regular basis. Spotlights and recessed spotlights direct the light more precisely onto specific areas, such as the kitchen units, a wardrobe or a wall in the hallway. LED panels are ideal when you want flat, unobtrusive ceiling lighting.

Wall lights serve a different purpose to ceiling lights because they distribute the light to the sides. You can highlight paths or make a wall appear more subdued. Pendant lights are particularly useful above tables, as they cast light deeper into the room and help to define seating areas more clearly. On furniture, LED strips, under-cabinet lights or small spotlights complement the existing room lighting. LED lighting for picture frames or shelves should be planned as supplementary accent lighting, so that pictures or objects remain visible without making the room look cluttered.

Customise your LED light with light colour, dimming and smart control

In everyday life, LED lighting is characterised primarily by its light colour, brightness and control options. Warm white is ideal for living areas, bedrooms and dining areas because it has a calmer feel and appears less clinical in the evening. Cool white is a good choice for activities that require greater concentration, such as in the kitchen, the utility room or at a desk. Daylight should be used sparingly, as it has a very clean and functional look and can quickly make living spaces appear cold.

Dimmable LED bulbs expand the range of uses for a room when the same space is needed for different situations. In the case of replaceable LED bulbs, the bulb should be compatible with the existing light fitting, the dimmer and the desired light colour. A living room may need more light during the day than in the evening, whilst a kitchen should be brighter when preparing food than when eating. Smart home-compatible lamps and lights also allow you to create scenes, set timers or control them via an app when you want to coordinate multiple light sources. An LED lighting system is particularly useful when several lights need to be controlled together, such as ceiling lights, LED strips and table lamps in an open-plan living area.

Planning indirect LED lighting and decorative LED lights for everyday use

Indirect LED lighting is suitable when you want to avoid direct glare. LED strips placed behind furniture, under shelves or along a suspended ceiling make surfaces appear brighter without a visible light source in the foreground. Indirect LED lighting can be less dazzling in the living room, bedroom or hallway than a very direct spotlight. With indirect LED lighting, careful positioning is important to ensure that individual LEDs do not cast visible reflections or create uneven patches of light.

Decorative LED lights serve a different purpose to general lighting. Fairy lights, small table lamps or illuminated glass objects tend to help you find your way around and create a soft, atmospheric glow. Decorative LED lights are no substitute for a ceiling light, but they can be used to enhance corners, sideboards or window areas. In the living room, the combination of direct and indirect lighting often looks more balanced if the brightest light is not the sole focal point of the whole room. With black lights, modern finishes or exposed profiles, the design should complement the interior décor without detracting from the lighting effect.

Installing LED lighting safely: IP code, power connection and accessories

With LED lighting, the installation situation determines the type of luminaire, the IP code, the connection type and the appropriate accessories. In dry living spaces, the focus is on design, connection and operation. In the bathroom, kitchen or covered outdoor area, the appropriate IP code is also required, as water vapour, splashes or damp may be present. The exact position of the light determines which protection rating is appropriate.

The power supply should also be checked before making a choice. Some LED lights are connected directly, whilst others require a power supply unit, a transformer, a profile or a connector. With LED strips, the length, mounting and the right control system are important to ensure that the light output remains uniform. Recessed spotlights require a ceiling that offers sufficient space for the relevant installation depth, whilst surface-mounted spotlights require less installation depth. Accessories such as dimmers, sensors, track lighting systems or replacement bulbs should be compatible with the relevant light to ensure that they operate correctly and produce the desired lighting effect. Whether it’s in the bathroom above the mirror, under a kitchen cupboard or in a suspended hallway ceiling, the specific installation location determines which LED light or LED accessory is most suitable.
