Indirect LED lighting is suitable when you want to avoid direct glare. Indirect LED lighting can be less dazzling in the living room, bedroom or hallway than a very direct spotlight. With indirect LED lighting, careful positioning is important to ensure that individual LEDs do not cast visible reflections or create uneven patches of light.
Decorative LED lights serve a different purpose to general lighting. Fairy lights, small table lamps or illuminated glass objects tend to help you find your way around and create a soft, atmospheric glow. Decorative LED lights are no substitute for a ceiling light, but they can be used to enhance corners, sideboards or window areas. In the living room, the combination of direct and indirect lighting often looks more balanced if the brightest light is not the sole focal point of the whole room. With black lights, modern finishes or exposed profiles, the design should complement the interior décor without detracting from the lighting effect.
Installing LED lighting safely: IP code, power connection and accessories
With LED lighting, the installation situation determines the type of luminaire, the IP code, the connection type and the appropriate accessories. In dry living spaces, the focus is on design, connection and operation. In the bathroom, kitchen or covered outdoor area, the appropriate IP code is also required, as water vapour, splashes or damp may be present. The exact position of the light determines which protection rating is appropriate.
The power supply should also be checked before making a choice. Some LED lights are connected directly, whilst others require a power supply unit, a transformer, a profile or a connector. With LED strips, the length, mounting and the right control system are important to ensure that the light output remains uniform. Recessed spotlights require a ceiling that offers sufficient space for the relevant installation depth, whilst surface-mounted spotlights require less installation depth. Accessories such as dimmers, sensors, track lighting systems or replacement bulbs should be compatible with the relevant light to ensure that they operate correctly and produce the desired lighting effect. Whether it’s in the bathroom above the mirror, under a kitchen cupboard or in a suspended hallway ceiling, the specific installation location determines which LED light or LED accessory is most suitable.
