A design classic by Poul Henningsen: the PH 5 300 pendant light

The PH 5 300 pendant light is a design classic from the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen and is named after its creator, Poul Henningsen. As well as being a designer, Henningsen was also an author and journalist – a man of many talents. From 1925 until his death in 1967, he worked as a designer for the long-established Danish company Louis Poulsen.

In 1958, he designed the PH 5 500 and its smaller counterpart, the PH 5 300. With this model, he further developed his acclaimed three-shade system, which had first been launched in 1926. To mark the 60th anniversary of the PH 5 300, new colour variants of this classic luminaire have been released.

The advantages and distinctive features that define this pendant light – and have kept it on the market for decades – are its 100 per cent glare-free illumination combined with optimal light distribution – directed downwards as well as to the sides and upwards. The special multi-shade system is designed in accordance with the Scandinavian design principle ‘form follows function’.
