Why pool lighting is important
Interplay of ambience, design & safetyThe right lighting around the pool combines mood, safety and design in an impressive way: It sets stylish accents, creates an inviting atmosphere and shows off the water perfectly at night - whether with colourful accents or an elegant play of light in warm white. At the same time, it improves orientation in the dark and increases safety: on paths, around the pool or along the terrace. This not only enhances the appearance of your outdoor area, but also optimises its functionality.
IP protection types play an important role in pool lighting IP protection types play a central role in connection with pool lighting. They indicate how well a luminaire is protected against the ingress of dust and water. The closer a light source is used to water, the higher the protection rating must be. Particularly high protection ratings are required inside the pool and directly at the pool edge: IP67 for temporary and IP68 for permanent submersion. For lighting around the pool, on paths, patios or in the lounge area, lower IP protection ratings are sufficient as long as there is no direct contact with water. This ensures that the pool and outdoor lighting can be used both safely and for a long time.

Which areas should be illuminated
Light for safety, structure and atmosphere throughout the pool areaIntegrated pool lighting takes into account several clearly defined areas around the outdoor pool and thus ensures safety, orientation and a harmonious atmosphere in the garden. Not only is the pool itself illuminated, but the entire surroundings are divided into meaningful light zones: in the pool, at the pool edge, on paths and steps, on the terrace and in the lounge and seating area.
Inside the pool, light not only creates a special depth effect and atmospheric staging of the water, but also makes the pool visible as such in the dark, which contributes significantly to safety. The pool edge lighting also fulfils an important dual function of design and safety, as it makes the course of the pool visible and creates clear edges.
On paths and stairs around the pool, safe orientation is paramount. Here, functional lighting ensures that the garden and pool area can also be used safely and easily in the evening hours. The terrace connects the living and pool areas and becomes an extended outdoor living space thanks to atmospheric lighting accents. In addition, neighbouring structures such as plants, privacy screens or walls can be discreetly accentuated with light to visually bring the entire pool area together.

Which solution suits which pool type
The right lighting solution for in-ground pools, above-ground pools, whirlpools and natural poolsNot every pool light is suitable for every pool. Depending on the construction method, material and use, different lighting solutions are suitable for optimally combining safety, comfort and atmosphere. Permanently installed underwater spotlights or integrated recessed LED lights are ideal for in-ground pools and concrete pools. They provide a high-quality look, uniform light and a permanent solution directly in the pool.
Flexible, retrofittable systems such as floating pool lights, magnetic LED lights or mobile solar lights are recommended for steel wall pools and above ground pools. These variants are easy to install and can be moved or removed again as required.
In the whirlpool, the ambience takes centre stage. Coloured LED lights, gentle light changes and atmospheric accents create a relaxing wellness feeling for long evenings in the warm water.
Subtle, natural lighting with warm white light, discreet floor spots or indirect light sources around the pool area are suitable for the natural pool. This preserves the natural character and emphasises the surroundings in style.

Floating pool lighting
These pool lamps go swimmingFor kids and adults alike, the cool water in the pool and above-ground pool is the number one place to cool off in summer. Floating pool lights such as balls and ducks are a must. When these not only float on the surface of the water, but also glow in bright colours, nothing stands in the way of fun. Special lighting accents for the pool are created by solar lamps with IP code IP68, which can either float on the water or be placed at the edge of the pool.

Underwater pool lighting
Spotlights for light under waterA pool is not only more inviting, but also safer the better it is lit. Spotlights installed in the floor or wall of the pool are the right choice for good visibility of the water surface. Thanks to protection class IP68, they can remain permanently under water without being damaged. The maximum depth of the water into which the spot may be installed must also be taken into account. These can be found in the data sheet in the store.

Pool edge lighting & lighting around the pool
Lighting ideas for safety, zone planning and ambience at the water's edgeWith the right pool edge lighting and well thought-out lighting around the pool, your outdoor area is not only atmospheric, but also functionally divided into clear light zones. This creates a harmonious overall picture that ideally combines atmosphere, orientation and safety:
- At the edge of the pool, LED strips or recessed light lines provide a clear visual boundary for the pool. They effectively highlight the water and at the same time increase safety in the dark, as edges are easier to recognise.
- On paths and steps around the pool, recessed spotlights or small bollard lights are ideal. They provide orientation and ensure that walkways remain safe to use even in the evening.
- The terrace and lounge zone thrives on atmospheric light. Indirect lighting, mobile lights or solar lamps are used here to create a relaxed holiday atmosphere without dazzling.
- The pool area can also be visually framed by privacy screens, plants or walls. Warm white light or targeted accent spotlights emphasise structures and create depth in the garden.
Functional areas such as technical access points or storage areas should also be discreetly but sufficiently illuminated to ensure safety and suitability for everyday use.
Important for all outdoor pool lighting: the closer the light source is installed to the water, the higher the IP protection rating must be. At least IP67 is recommended directly by the pool, as this protection class can easily withstand temporary submersion.

Colourful lighting design of the pool
Pool lighting with atmosphereWhen selecting lamps and lights for in and around the pool, it is important to pay close attention to the light colour:
- Warm white (<3,300 K) has a cosy and homely effect and creates a lounge-like atmosphere. The lower the Kelvin number, the more similar the light colour is to candlelight.
- Neutral white (3,300-5,300 K) is suitable for areas around the pool that need to be safe to walk on - including the technical zone as well as steps and paths. In addition, cool white brings out the true colours of water, pools and plants without any colour cast.
- RGB LEDs (multicolour bulbs) provide colourful light colours. With smart lights, they can be selected as an option - for example for a pool party or cosy lounge atmosphere. Smart lights with RGBW function come with a selection of colour effects and colour change programmes and can be controlled by remote control or smartphone app, depending on the model.
Tip: Colourful accents can also be set around the pool - for example with smart garden lights or coloured LED spotlights in the surrounding area.
