Select patio lighting for the seating area, dining area and open spaces

Patio lighting is important if the dining area is used after dinner, children run between the house and garden or the seating area is to remain usable after dark. A single luminaire is usually not sufficient for these situations. The terrace is where food, conversation, short distances and sometimes even work at the plant table come together. Good lighting organises these uses without making the outdoor area unnecessarily bright. When selecting patio lighting, it is therefore not only the type of luminaire that is decisive, but above all the place where the light is needed.

Patio lighting for the dining area, seating area and paths on the patio

When it comes to patio lighting, it is first worth looking at the areas that are actually used. At the dining table, you need light that makes plates, glasses and faces recognisable without causing too much glare. The requirements are different in the seating area, where orientation and a calm brightness are required above all. On paths between the patio door, barbecue and garden, directional light helps to keep edges and steps visible. A wall light next to the exit often illuminates the transition from the house to the patio, while a table light or a low light at the edge makes the area around the sofa or bench more pleasant to use. Anyone entering the patio from the side benefits from a light with motion detector at this entrance. The result is not a uniformly illuminated space, but lighting that specifically supports everyday life on the patio.

Patio lights to match wood, stone and textiles in outdoor areas

Patio lights never work on their own, but always together with the floor, furniture and surfaces. Light falls differently on wooden decking boards than on stone slabs or large porcelain stoneware surfaces. Wood absorbs light more softly, whereas light-coloured stone surfaces reflect light more strongly and can appear unsettled more quickly. A flat outdoor wall light has a more restrained effect because the light is directed downwards and does not additionally illuminate open wall surfaces. Lamps with a closed shade or opal diffuser are often suitable next to lounge furniture with fabric upholstery because the light is then more evenly distributed at seat height. A solid wooden or metal garden table, on the other hand, goes well with clearly defined points of light, such as a wall lamp or a discreet hanging lamp under the roof. A chain of lights can work as a supplement if the area is already sufficiently illuminated and only the edge of the area is to be emphasised more discreetly.

Select lamps for the patio according to height, space requirements and installation type

Lamps for the patio should match the size of the area and the walkways. On narrow patios, protruding floor lamps quickly take up space, especially if chairs need to be moved or access to the garden needs to be kept clear. On narrow patios, flat wall lights, a compact table lamp or lights on posts are the more practical choice. In larger areas, the luminaire can be more present because there is more distance to seating and passageways. A patio lamp at standing height can clearly separate a lounge area from the dining area without the need for additional furniture. Under a fixed canopy, ceiling lights for outdoors can also be considered if their lower edge does not interfere with standing up or walking through. A good selection is therefore based less on the pure amount of light and more on proportions, movement area and the question of whether the luminaire is best positioned on the wall, on the ceiling, on the table or free-standing in the room.

Plan lighting for decking boards and patio roofing separately

Lighting for decking boards and lighting for the patio roof should be planned separately because the two areas fulfil different tasks. On open terraces, a clear distribution from the house to the outside helps. The area at the door and table is illuminated first, followed by peripheral zones such as steps, planters or the transition to the lawn. With floorboards, it makes sense to consider edges and directions, because otherwise the light will visually shorten the surface or emphasise individual boards too much. Under a canopy, light can be focused more specifically, for example above the table or along a beam, so that the centre of the patio does not remain dark. Recessed spotlights can work there if they are not only positioned in the centre but are oriented towards the actual usable areas. In open areas, lateral points of light are often more pleasant than strong light from above, as this makes seating areas, the floor and paths appear more evenly connected.

Classify patio lamps in open areas and under the roof according to IP protection class

Patio lamps should be selected according to the installation situation. In open areas, a luminaire needs a higher IP protection rating than under a sealed canopy because rain and splash water come into direct contact with the housing and connections. LED is common for this application because many luminaires can be built compactly and the brightness remains easily controllable. Warm white is usually more suitable for the dining area and seating area. Neutral white can be useful on side paths or at the entrance. As a rough guide, 100 to 150 lumens per square metre are sufficient for general patio lighting. At the transition from the covered seating area to the open garden steps, what counts is not one luminaire for both areas, but a suitably protected solution along precisely this section of the path.
