Room Lighting

When planning a lighting scheme for your home your firstly need to consider the uses of each room, followed by the uses of specific areas within each room. It is important to divide rooms into 'utility' spaces like this so you can determine the intensity, quality and variety of light required. For instance, the kitchen is a room in which almost every surface is a workspace and so need to combine a bright level of basic illumination with many focused task lights. In contrast, the living room requires a more relaxed environment and is likely to have more focal points, so it is necessary to combine a lower level of basic illumination with interesting accent lighting and pools of task light designed to facilitate reading and other such tasks.

Any good lighting scheme should be made up of several layers of lighting - a general/ambient layer which is intended to simulate sunlight during the night, accent light which is used to create interest, drama and atmosphere within a room as well as for highlighting interesting features and task lighting which should be tailored to maximise illumination of various workspaces.

When choosing light for your home it is important not only to consider the intended use of a light and its position within the overall d?cor, but also the efficiency of each light fixture as well as the type of bulb and control mechanism needed. When you consider each of these points, you should be able to create a well balanced, functional scheme which enhances the practicality and appearance of your home.
