Nightlights

Nightlights are an efficient way of providing low cost, soft illumination during night time hours. They are particularly useful in hallways and are often used in children’s bedrooms to reassure and comfort without disturbing sleep.

Until recently the majority of nightlights were powered by incandescent bulbs and although these are reasonably efficient, recent developments in LED technology has meant that nightlights can be powered with less than 1 watt. The use of LED lighting in this way has opened up options meaning that now nightlights can change colour or be used to recreate stars on the ceiling.

Many nightlights are available with photo sensors which ensure that the nightlight comes on at dusk and switch off again at dawn. Others are fitted with motion sensors so that they only illuminate when someone passes by so as to save even more electricity; these nightlights are particularly effective when placed by doors.

Until recently there was concern that the use of nightlights in young children’s rooms resulted in an increased risk of myopia (nearsightedness) as was indicated by a study completed by the University of Pennsylvania (Nature). However, more recent research has since refuted this claim and instead implies that the use of nightlights in children’s room has no adverse effect.

Many children find having a nightlight on in their room whilst they sleep very comforting, they are also incredibly useful for moving around the house at night time without the need to switch on a bright light. Whether incandescent or LED based, nightlights provide a low cost, energy efficient way of lighting the home throughout the midnight hours.
