Living Room LightingThe living room is a space which requires many different focused pools of light layered upon a soft level of base illumination. Primarily, the living room is a space for relaxation and entertainment and it must be lit accordingly. In this sense it is important to avoid installing a lighting scheme which results in glare on television screens, computers and other home entertainment units. The use of uplighting (whereby light is directed upwards, turning the whole ceiling into a gentle light source) will avoid this.A central pendant or chandelier fitted with a dimmer switch will contribute to the d?cor of the room as well as providing a flexible layer of base illumination. These can be coordinated with sconces and the shades of table lamps to produce consistency throughout the lighting scheme. Recessed spot, track or cable lighting can be directed so as to illuminate interesting features within your living room, such as a beautiful paining or vase. They can also be positioned so as to make the architecture of your room a feature in its own right; either by grazing an exposed brick chimney breast, washing spacious walls with light or by illuminated an otherwise dark and uninteresting corner. Ceiling fitted lighting fixtures are incredibly flexible and versatile light sources with which to brighten your living space. Sconces affixed to the walls will illuminate the room indirectly and are available in such a huge range of sizes and styles they can be used as an artistic feature in their own right. Sconces are also the perfect light source with which to illuminate task areas where there is little floor or table space for lamps. Rope lighting can be placed along the edges of cabinets, entertainment units, shelves or fireplaces to add an additional layer of accent light to the room and to illuminate areas which would otherwise be cast in shadow. Table and floor lamps can be placed by chairs and sofas and on side boards to provide focused task lighting and mood or fibre optic light fixtures can be used to add additional pools of light to the room. The key to successfully lighting a living room is to choose attractive and complimentary light fixtures which incorporate pools of light with focused accent lighting and a soft level of basic illumination so as to create a highly flexible yet relaxed lighting scheme. |
