Lamps

A successful, attractive and practical lighting scheme should work on the principle of layers. A central ceiling fixture is often used to provide a general level of illumination throughout a room, however this often results in shadows and darker areas in the corners of a room; this is where lamps come in. There is such a variety of lamps available in such a huge range of shapes and styles; they can be used to provide layers of accent and task lighting as well as an interesting feature within a room.

Table lamps are incredibly versatile lighting solutions and not only provide stylish focal points in a room, when placed by a chair or on a bedside table they also provide an excellent source of task lighting. With the huge variety of table lamps available it is possible to make as much or as little of a statement with your lamp as your room requires. Stained glass lamps always make an attractive addition to any room, as do those made from wrought iron and wood when fitted with simple shades.

Desk lamps are ergonomically designed to provide high level task light whilst avoiding glare. The most innovative variety of desk lamps is the anglepoise. Designed in 1933 and inspired by the constant tension principle of human joints, its continual use today is a testament to its functionality. Its spring loaded joints mimic the human arm so it is flexible enough to be repositioned yet stable enough to hold its position without a clamp. Its versatility makes it the most suitable lamp to use in a work or office environment.

Floor lamps are excellent for lighting dark corners as well as for providing task lighting when placed near chairs. They usually stand between 4 and 5 foot tall and like other lamps come in a huge variety of styles.

A popular form of floor lamp is the torchiere, these focus all of their light towards the ceiling which then provides a soft level of illumination throughout the room; excellent for enhancing the general lighting level. Often torchieres will comprise a lower branch which holds a smaller, more focused task light designed for reading; this dual function makes them an incredibly versatile form of lighting.

Touch lamps are incredibly popular for use as accent lighting especially in hallways near telephones or as bedside light. This is not only because of the simplicity with which they illuminate (this can be incredibly useful during at night time as they provide you with light after a single touch anywhere on the lamp rather than having to find a switch in the dark) but also because they work on the principle of capitance, the majority of touch lamps have 3 levels of brightness. This makes then an incredibly versatile lighting solution indeed as they can be set to the brightest level when task lighting is needed and then to the dimmest setting when atmospheric lighting is wanted.

The versatility of lamps is increased further by the type of bulb fitted as coloured bulbs also create very different and striking effects within a room. Even fitted with regular bulbs, lamps provide an incredibly practical and attractive lighting solution which can be used throughout the house.
