Fibre Optic Lighting Suggestions

Fibre optic lighting is made up of 3 components which make them a versatile, safe, economical and efficient way to light your home. They comprise a remote light source, a fibre optic harness which transmits light and some form of end fitting. There is such a wide variety of end fittings available and it is these which transform the way fibre optic strands direct light into a room.

There are several main types of fibre optic end fittings available which result in an even spread of light throughout a room. Tube lighting is made up of a steel tube encasing fibre optic strands; this can either be angled upwards or downwards and provides a wash of light across the wall it is mounted upon. These are particularly useful as they can be fitted in places that are typically hard to light. Colourwash lights are typically mounted into the ceiling and provide an even level of lighting throughout the room. In the same way, paving lights can be implanted in the floor or stairs to provide illumination at ground level.

These are the three main options for practical indoor lighting using fibre optics and can be used together to provide general ambiance throughout the home, this is particularly this case when these lights are used in conjunction with a colour wheel at the light source.

More decorative uses of fibre optic lights in the home include star, spa and sensory lighting. Fibre optic star fittings use different sized end fittings, embedded either into the ceiling or into the floor often in conjunction with a twinkle fitting at the light source to recreate the feeling of sleeping under the stars. These are often used instead of nightlight in children's bedrooms; however they also make a particularly attractive and relaxing addition to bathroom and adult bedroom ceilings.

Fibre optic lighting can be used effectively in bathrooms to recreate a 'spa' feel. When placed above a shower or around the outside of a bath, fibre optic lights create a pleasant level of light and a sense of ambiance, especially when used in conjunction with a colour wheel.

The use of fibre optics in sensory lighting is excellent for stimulating the minds of young children and those with learning difficulties as they are made with a cracked outer coating and so produce a twinkling effect. They are also completely safe to touch and when used with a colour wheel are also brilliant in helping teach colours to young children.

The practical use of fibre optics in the home also extends to their use outdoors. They are ideal to use in the garden for landscaping purposes as their remote light source means the end fittings don't produce any heat that could harm plants and will also be unaffected by rain and watering. They are also an incredibly practical alternative to light paths and driveways as they can be embedded into the floor and will provide a low wash of light across the ground which complies with current security lighting recommendations.

When a suitable end fitting is used, fibre optics can be used to effectively illuminate both swimming pools and ponds. End fittings can be placed around the edge of a pool or pond to gently illuminate the water. The use of fibre optics to light water is also highly practical as there are no bulbs in the water making this a much safer option from an electrical point of view.

Within each type of fitting described above there is a huge variety of different shapes and styles with which you can use fibre optics to light your home.
