Ceiling LightsCeiling fitted light fixtures are ideal for providing ambient, task and accent lighting within any room. As they lay close to, or in the ceiling they are able to illuminate a room without drawing the eye upwards towards the actual light source and only become a feature when switched on.When choosing a fitted ceiling fixture it is necessary not only to decide where light is required, but also the type and width of light needed. Focused halogen spot lights are most appropriate for accent and task lighting, whereas wider beams of incandescent or fluorescent bulbs provide a better source of ambient light. Recessed lighting is a popular choice because it is housed in the ceiling and so is virtually unnoticeable until it is switched on. It is also an incredibly practical source of light for rooms with low or sloped ceilings as it takes up no head room, allowing maximum use of space and illuminating areas that would otherwise remain in shadow. Recessed lights consist of a trim (the visible part of the light) and the housing which is concealed in the ceiling. If being used to provide ambient illumination within a room, it is best to space recessed lights approximately 6 foot apart and leave at least 3 foot between each light and the wall unless you are intending to use the fixture as part of a wall lighting feature. Different varieties of trim are available to tailor them to their specific uses. Eyeball trims can be swiveled to provide directional accent light, reflector trims can be used to maximize the illumination provided by a recessed lamp whereas wall washers and swivel trims can be used to create different lighting effects in a room. Trims are usually available in white so as to blend in with the ceiling although metallic finished trims are also popular. Track lighting is an equally versatile form of fitted ceiling fixture as you can customise it to meet your exact lighting requirements. It consists of a set of plastic or aluminium tracks which contain exposed electrical wiring; these can be attached to the ceiling in almost any configuration so you can place lights where they are needed. Lamp heads are then fitted in to the track and positioned so as to provide either focused or general lighting. The lamp heads are available in a huge range of shapes and styles and also in a variety of beam widths which can be combined so your track can provide both accent and ambient illumination. The flexibility of track lighting is not just limited to the configuration of the track, but also includes the lamp heads. They can be moved along the track and then swiveled and rotated so as to focus on different areas of the room; more lamp heads can be added as needs dictate. Cable lighting is another flexible form of ceiling light and although it can be used to provide ambient light, it is usually fitted with low voltage halogen bulbs and so is generally better for use as accent lighting. The halogen spotlights are positioned along a bendable cable which houses the electricity source. These can then be aimed in different directions so as to highlight different features within a room. For a more unique touch, you could hang a series of small pendant heads from the cable; this creates a dramatic finish especially when grouped in clusters over a worktop. When installing multiple ceiling fixtures, it is important not to overload your mains electricity supply. It is always best to seek the advice of a qualified electrician especially when installing recessed or low wattage lighting as they have special requirements. When designed and installed correctly, fitted ceiling fixtures are a highly versatile and practical source of lighting which compliments any room. |
