Bedroom Lighting

Above anything else, the lighting in your bedroom needs to be flexible. When designing the lighting scheme in your bedroom you must divide the room into areas of use and light each accordingly, for instance a dressing table will require its own task light, a dim light focused on a wardrobe will enable you to dress without disturbing a partner’s sleep and a bedside light will help you read during the evening.

Although the bedroom should be a place for relaxation, brighter light is sometimes needed; the best way to achieve this is by layering light from many different fixtures and sources. By using either an interesting pendent with a shielding shade or an uplight operated by a dimmer switch you will have the flexibility to create atmospheric lighting in the evening and bright light for when you are dressing. Sconces placed around the walls of your bedroom can create an additional, complimentary layer of soft light. It is advisable to fit the main bedroom light with a 3 way switch so that you can operate the level of illumination from your bed as well as from the entrance to your room.

When lighting a dressing table or sink area, remember that it is best to light mirrors from the sides rather than from the top so as to provide a clear view of the face, avoiding shadows. Placing sconces either side of a vanity area is a good option as it uses little space whilst adding another feature to the room.

As far as bedside lights go, it is best to choose flexible table or wall mounted lights which can be angled as appropriate for reading or watching television. Touch lamps are a practical option for bedside lighting as they illuminate without you having to search for a light switch in the dark. It is best to install a bedside light either side of a shared bed so that one partner can operate the light without disturbing the other.

If you begin by creating a soft level of base light and incorporate interesting accent lighting with flexible pools of task light, you can create a practical yet incredibly relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom.
