Bathroom Lighting

The lighting scheme in your bathroom needs to be functional yet adaptable. It needs to encompass a relatively bright level of illumination for morning use as well as a more relaxed lighting scheme to aid relaxation during the evening. Both of these schemes need to be supplemented with a well lit mirror area for shaving and make up application.

Recessed spots or light fixtures fitted flush to the ceiling are both good options for general illumination in your bathroom, especially when fitted with a dimmer switch as this enables you to adjust the level of light to suit your mood. If you are planning to install lighting above or within your shower or bath enclosure it is essential that you choose low voltage lighting and ensure that the fixtures are suitable for use in a damp environment. Low voltage halogen bulbs are a good choice as they can be used in conjunction with a dimmer switch and provide a clean white light of a similar tone to daylight (this is especially good for makeup application).

Although the majority of bathroom mirrors tend to be illuminated from above by a fluorescent light this will result in shadows on the face. A preferable method is to light the mirror from the sides as this will eliminate shadows and cast an even spread of light over the face giving you maximum visibility. Decorative sconces placed either side of the mirror will provide this type of illumination whilst being an attractive feature in their own right.

The bathroom is the perfect place to introduce mood lighting to your home. By installing fibre optic or LED lights around or in your bath or shower enclosure you can alter the colour of this space to suit your mood, choosing orange or green to invigorate you in the morning, and soothing blues or purples to aid relaxation. Mood lighting is also a very practical and flexible way to introduce colour into an otherwise plain white bathroom.
